Microsoft hat heute den Data Protection Server (DPS) angekündigt, eine plattenbasierte Backuplösung. Dabei handelt es sich laut Microsoft um ein separat zu installierendes Serversystem, das Backup und Wiederherstellungsprozesse automatisieren soll.

Die Entscheidung für ein plattenbasiertes und gegen ein bandbasiertes Backupsystem hat Microsoft nach eigenen Angaben auf Grund der in der letzten Zeit rapide fallenden Preise für Festplatten getroffen. Zudem sei ein solches System schneller, stabiler und leichter zu verwalten als ein Backup auf Band.
